I was presented with a remarkable opportunity when CBRE requested a proposal for a unique and inspiring architectural design. Recognizing the chance to leverage my signature style, I eagerly took on the challenge of curating an entire lobby at 33 New Montgomery, situated in the heart of downtown San Francisco. This project not only allowed me to showcase my art practice seamlessly blended with architecture but also served as a testament to my ability to create spaces that transcend boundaries and embody the essence of office culture.

The lobby, with its soaring ceiling reaching approximately 50 feet, presented an exciting canvas for creativity. Illuminated primarily by the breathtaking curtain walls and surrounded by glass walls on two sides, I envisioned a design concept that revolved around light, embracing a contemporary aesthetic with a unified color scheme. By harnessing the abundant natural light from the high ceiling, I seized the unique opportunity to create sculptures that defied gravity, seemingly descending from above.

For an office-used building, white seamlessly blends with the psychology of office culture. It symbolizes cleanliness, purity, and simplicity, providing crisp and elegant appearance that aligns with the professional environment. The all-white color palette for the walls and ceiling creates a neutral backdrop, allowing other design elements to stand out and make a powerful statement. The choice of eco-friendly plaster materials, such as clay or lime plaster, contributes to a healthier indoor environment while maintaining the visual appeal of the lobby. These natural and nontoxic plasters, incorporating recycled materials, exemplify the project’s sustainable objectives, ensuring that every aspect of the lobby’s design embodies an eco-conscious approach. The lobby transformation at 33 Montgomery reflects not only the seamless integration of art and architecture but also a profound understanding of the office culture’s aesthetics. By harnessing natural light, incorporating white surfaces, and employing sustainable materials, the design creates an uplifting, spacious, and elegant space that aligns with the functional needs of an office environment. The resulting ambiance establishes a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere, promoting occupant well-being and supporting sustainable practices.
